Since its
inception, this consortium has been working with the
two school districts to align their respective
transportation policies and where possible to serve
children attending the two systems using common bus
routes.
Prior to the
formation of the partnership, each school district
contracted its own buses and managed its own routes.
Given that many of the buses servicing routes
particularly in rural areas were not loaded to
capacity, the DDSB often extended available seats to
students who did not qualify for transportation. In
this case, the use of these ‘surplus’ seats did not
appreciably change the school district’s cost of
contracting the buses.
"Surplus" seats are no longer available even though buses may
not be filled. In the current arrangement, the cost
of the bus service is shared by the consortium
partners, each assuming the proportion of the cost
that corresponds to their usage. Assume a community
having 1500 riders, 1000 aligned with the DDSB and
500 with the DCDSB. In this case, the DDSB would
assume 2/3 of the transportation cost and the DCDSB
1/3 of the overall cost (i.e.1000/1500). Were the
DDSB to allow an additional 500 students to use
available seats on various routes, its portion of
the overall cost would increase to 75% (i.e.
1500/2000). This is one of the reasons that school
officials are careful to ensure that only those with
eligibility gain access to transportation service.

Very often, these announcements
indicate that bus services to schools north of Highway
#7 has been cancelled. This can be confusing,
particularly for residents of Brock for whom Highway 7
runs east from Sunderland to Lindsay. To date, efforts
to have this announcement list the municipalities
effected have had limited success. Please note,
when school bus cancellation, “north of Highway 7” is
announced, service to all schools in Uxbridge and
Brock has been cancelled. |
